Background
3 on 3 NHL Arcade is a sports game that offers quick games of 3 on 3 Ice Hockey (I would describe it as 4 on 4 as its 3 outfield players plus 1 goalie). The game is definitely on the arcade end of the sport simulation spectrum since as well as being easy to play the game includes power ups! something I somehow doubt you will find in real ice hockey. The game also acts as a kind of promotional tool for the full NHL 09 game for people like myself who would not normally consider buying a full price ice hockey game but after enjoying this game find they want something more in depth.
Main Reasons to Buy
Its a fun little game, and is one of those games you may find yourself dipping into every now and again when the mood takes you. The graphics and sound of a reasonably high standard, and you do not need to know anything about Ice Hockey to get the most out of it.
Main Reasons to Avoid
The game is very limited as it is essentially quick play only as there are no leagues or cups. There are also only two teams Red and Blue, and the customization of these teams is limited. The terms and conditions of the online component also state that it can be withdrawn at any time after 30 days notice have been posted on the EA website, or 30 days after the last day of the NHL 2008-2009 season.
My Recommendation
CONSIDER – 6/10
While this game is fun to play, for 800 MS points I expect more that just a quick play mode even though it does have multi player. If this game had been priced at 400 MS points or had more customisation options including a basic league and different strips I would have recommended purchasing it, as things stand it is a definite case of try before you buy.
