Game Review: Trivial Pursuit

Game Details

  • Title: Trivial Pursuit
  • Developer: Electronic Arts
  • Released (UK): 13/03/2009
  • Age Rating: 3+
  • Game Type: Board Games
  • Multi-player: Up to 4 player local only

Background

An adaptation of the popular board game for the Xbox 360.

Positives

It has 2 new modes including single player, its easy and fun to play and for Gamerscore Whores a relatively easy 1000 points for less than 10 hours play (possibly less than 5). Good conversion of questions to multiple choice format. You can also have local multiplayer with only 1 controller.

Negatives

NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

It doesnt have online multiplayer in case you missed it the first 5 times, there is also the ubiquitous patronising annoying announcer that all general knowledge trivia games seem to have, which makes you wish it was a FPS so you could shoot them. The map based answers also lacked location names which meant getting questions wrong that I knew. The “cheat” prevention system is also easily countered by disconnecting your controller by removing the battery pack (usb cord if wired) or quickly going to dashboard if you answer a question wrong, though it could be argued that these are positives. There are also no AI opponents and as I seem to have forgotten to mention it NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER and NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER

My Recommendation

AVOID – 5/10

Ironically for a game I recommend avoiding it is a game I am going to keep a hold of despite getting all the achievements (and being the first person in the world on live to do so in the process). This is because it is a game that you can play with non gaming friends and family. That being said the longevity is crippled by the lack of online multiplayer. I generally give poor ratings for 3 reasons, the first reason being a game sucks, the second reason being it lacks features it should have as standard, the third reason being a combination of the first 2 reasons. Trivial Pursuit falls firmly in the second category

I think you can guess why in addition to the poor rating it is primarily due to Trivial Pursuit having No Online Multiplayer, seriously whoever decided that online versions of boardgames do not need to have as standard online multiplayer needs to be fired for crippling games that would otherwise be quite good if you like these sorts of game.
