DLC Details

  • Main Title: Fallout 3
  • DLC Title: Point Lookout
  • Released (UK): 25/06/2009
  • Current Price: 800 MS Points (~$10 US)
  • Estimated Length: 5 hours

Background

Another month another fairly substantial expansion to Fallout 3, after last months long anticipated Broken Steel DLC which “fixed” the ending and raised the level cap to 30, Point Lookout has a lot to live up to. This DLC is a slight departure from the previous offerings as there is not one big quest but rather several which are no longer linked aside from the setting, and while not as good value as Broken Steel it is still a high quality piece of DLC.

New Content and Integration into Original Game

The new area in the DLC Point Lookout is primarily swamp with a few shacks, mansions and an abandoned fairground. as well as new types of Ghouls and Mirelurks, there are a few new types of enemies who are best described as mutated axe wielding, and shotgun toting locals who shoot first and don’t bother asking any questions later. The tone of the DLC seems to take a lot from 50s B movie horror and includes references to Indian Burial Grounds.

The new area is accessed in a similar way to those in The Pitt and Operation Anchorage in that you receive a message on your Hud about a new area of interest, then you go to the area, and are transported to the new area in the game.

New Achievements

There are a few new achievements added in Point Lookout, which are obtained through completing some of the quests, and exploring the area thoroughly. There is nothing particularly innovative about them though.

Positives

  • Its more Fallout 3
  • Sensible Moral Choices
  • Different tone of Quests to those in previous DLC
  • “Magic” Seeds

Negatives

  • Background to one of the Quests is unclear
  • Little in the way of new enemies

My Recommendation

Buy – 8/10

This is yet another high quality piece of DLC for Fallout 3, and the main drawback to it that I can see is that there are already 3 packs released for the game of which Broken Steel is better value. That being said I am starting to tire a bit of these small packs of DLC and would prefer it if a larger albeit more expensive DLC was released over a longer period even if all they did was integrate what would be a few separate DLC “packs” into a single unit. Like the other DLC it also suffers from having little in the way of totally unique content.

Moans aside I thoroughly enjoyed this DLC and recommend it to fans of Fallout 3 who have already obtained Broken Steel.
