My Impressions
The Third Deus Ex game was a welcome addition to the franchise with it following in the footsteps of the previous games with an enjoyable mix of RPG, FPS and Stealth. As is fast becoming the norm there is now some DLC in the form of the Missing Link.
Chronologically the missing link takes place just before the penultimate mission of the game and explains that while you thought you took a ship all the way to the secret base, you actually had a minor detour on the way to another secret base and you start off captured, your upgrades lost and in need of a way off the base.
While you do have the opportunity to get your upgrades back, the big achievement is to complete the DLC without any upgrades (or use any weapons or grenades) which means that unless you save and reload to get all of the achievements is probably going to take 2 runs through the DLC.
The gameplay is much the same as the main game, though the environment is fairly unique with several hidden areas that are easily missed especially if you do not have the necessary upgrades. Some of the dialog given by characters also changes depending on if you opt for stealth or carnage while navigating your way through the level.
The story itself fits in nicely with the Deus Ex mythos both in terms of Human Revolution and all 3 games as a whole. The game also helps to fill in a few small gaps of what was going on in the main game and somehow manages to pull off both feeling like it adds something new to the main game but not feel like it was deliberately pulled from the main game to be later released as DLC as too often is the case.
There is one big problem with the DLC though in that it costs 1200MSP which I feel is probably 400MSP too many given that it will probably be a Deal of the Week at some point in the future. Another issue is that this sets a new benchmark for DLC of this type and size and it wont be too long before 1200MSP becomes the new normal point rather than the exception if the XBLA experience is anything to go by.
That is not to say that there isn’t sufficient content or quality to justify the price as there is, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the DLC and if you enjoyed the main game it is worth considering. Given the price and the fact we are in the middle of the winter glut of games it may be worth holding out for a price cut however.
